Are you passionate about waste reduction and ready to take on a challenging, public-facing role helping bring others along on Edmonton’s journey towards a zero waste future? Help bring the City’s 25-year Waste Strategy to life through frontline, door-to-door education to support the apartment and condo transition to food scraps and recycling sorting. Reporting to the Outreach Coordinator, you will be part of a team of Waste Outreach Educators who educate residents on their doorsteps.
This role works almost exclusively in the afternoons and evenings. This position is ideal for enthusiastic individuals with a background in education or customer service who thrive when interacting with the community and can professionally manage difficult conversations.
What will you do?
- Conduct door-to-door educational outreach and collect data; this occasionally includes interacting with residents who may have varied opinions, are unreceptive, or are currently facing challenges adopting new waste sorting habits
- Answer questions about waste services, share information, educational tools, materials and strategize with residents to help empower them to properly sort and dispose of their waste
- Visit apartment and condo residents year-round, working both indoors and outdoors in various weather and environmental conditions
- Help residents overcome barriers related to food scraps and recycling sorting while asking for a commitment to changing waste sorting behaviour
- Communicate respectfully and inclusively with members of the public, team members, other waste services program areas and supervisors
- Use online data mapping software to record statistical information, conversation outcomes, waste sorting behaviour commitments, and other relevant data
- Closely follow safety procedures and practice self-care while working independently in the field
- Act as ambassador for Waste Services and represent Waste Services in a positive, diplomatic, and professional way
- Call and act as a point of contact for property managers or other building staff. Answer questions, and elevate concerns to the appropriate parties if necessary
- Coordinate building access to apartments and condos with the property manager
- Provide regular status updates and reports to Outreach Coordinators regarding canvassing supplies, technological assets, leased vehicles and field conditions
- Perform other related duties as required
