The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (FPPS) invites applications from current FPPS employees who hold a tenured or tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor rank for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC).
This internal opportunity reflects the Faculty's commitment to advancing research excellence by supporting an exceptional emerging researcher in developing an internationally recognized program of research. Through the Canada Research Chairs Program, the Faculty seeks to strengthen its research capacity, foster innovation, and build on its existing strengths across the spectrum of health research.
This Faculty welcomes applications from researchers working in all four Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) pillars of health research (Biomedical Research; Clinical Research; Health Services Research; and/or Social, Cultural, Environmental and Population Health Research). Particular interest exists in research aligned with the Faculty’s strategic strengths in Drug Discovery and Development and Health Services Research; however, outstanding applicants from all areas of health research will be considered.
The successful candidate will be an exceptional emerging researcher who is, or demonstrates the potential to become, a nationally and internationally recognized leader in their field. The Chair will establish and lead an innovative and impactful research program that complements the Faculty's strategic research priorities and is supported by competitive peer-reviewed funding, including funding from the CIHR or other prominent funding agencies (or with the potential for such support in the near future).
The successful candidate will be expected to
lead an innovative and productive program of research with the potential to achieve international recognition;
secure and maintain competitive external research funding;
publish a sustained body of scholarly work in high-quality peer-reviewed journals appropriate to their discipline;
foster interdisciplinary collaboration within the Faculty, across the University, and with external partners;
supervise and mentor graduate students and trainees; and
contribute to the Faculty's research environment through academic leadership and service.
The successful candidate will
Currently hold a tenured or tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor rank within the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences;
Hold a PhD, PharmD, PharmD/MSc, PharmD/PhD, or equivalent doctoral qualification in a relevant health research discipline. A PhD is a requirement of the faculty and not of the Canada Research Chairs Program.
Demonstrate an established record of scholarly productivity appropriate to their career stage;
Demonstrate success, or strong potential for success, in obtaining competitive peer-reviewed research funding;
Demonstrate the ability to develop and lead collaborative research initiatives; and
Demonstrate excellence in communication and mentorship.
Hiring preference will be given to candidates who have received a minimum of two years of postdoctoral training.
CRC Requirements
Tier 2 CRCs are intended for exceptional emerging researchers (i.e., candidates must have had their first independent active research-related appointment for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Applicants who are more than 10 years from their first independent academic research-related appointment (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.)
may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program's Tier 2 justification process . Please consult the University of Alberta CRC Coordinator, Glen Thomas (crcadmin@ualberta.ca) for more information. Full program information, including details on eligibility criteria and acceptable leaves, can be found on the Canada Research Chairs website: http://www.chairs-chaires.

NB: The CRC Program does not require a PhD (and the stipulations of a PhD is a requirement of the faculty only).
The University of Alberta recognizes the legitimate impact that leaves (e.g., parental leave, leave due to illness) can have on a candidate's record of research achievement and that these leaves will be taken into careful consideration during the assessment process.
The successful applicant will have a demonstrated ability to conduct and lead original, innovative research working in a collaborative team environment, and will possess excellent communication skills.
Please consult the Canada Research Chairs website for full program information, including further details on eligibility criteria.
The successful applicant will be nominated for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair. Nominations are subject to review by the CRC Secretariat, and appointment as a Canada Research Chair is conditional upon their approval.
